The Saskatchewan School Boards Association is expressing their support for the National School Food Policy, announced today by the federal government.
The policy outlines the government’s plan to create and deliver the National School Food Program across Canada.
Investing over $1 billion over the course of five years, the National School Food Program aims to provide meals to up to 400,000 more kids every year, on top of those already served by existing school food programs.
Jaimie Smith-Windsor, the president of the SSBA, says “there is a universal need in this country, and this commitment to school food and student nutrition is really important for Saskatchewan students.”
The federal government anticipates that the National School Food Program is expected to save participating families with two kids up to $800 a year in grocery bills. It will come into effect in the 2024-25 school year at the earliest.
