The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the federal government to scrap the carbon tax as Canadians continue to struggle financially. CTF Federal Director Franco Terrazzano says if the federal government even slightly cared about affordability, it would scrap the carbon tax, immediately improving Canadians’ ability to put food on the table and gas in their cars once again.
He adds that several of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s own government agencies have shown how much the carbon tax has increased the cost of living for Canadians. The Canada Revenue Agency shows the carbon tax increased the price of gasoline by 14 cents per litre, diesel by 17 cents per litre, and natural gas by 12 cents per cubic metre. The Bank of Canada wrote to Parliament’s finance committee that if the carbon tax is removed from the prices of gasoline, natural gas and fuel, the inflation rate would be reduced by 0.4 percentage points.
He adds that the carbon tax doesn’t do anything to improve environmental footprints, it only makes it harder and more expensive for farmers to produce food, therefor increasing the price of that food at the grocery store. Terrazzano suggests that instead of having a carbon tax, Canada exports clean forms of energy around the world to replace dirtier energy resources in places like China.
