The harvest is off to an early start in the Eston area, about 60 kilometres southeast of Kindersley in west-central Saskatchewan.
Dave Hewlitt started combining lentils on August 1st as the crop ripened quickly under the warm and very dry conditions. A few rare showers slowed the harvest down a bit last week, but Hewlitt is combining durum this week. Yields are about what was expected—anywhere from 50 to 60 per cent of a normal crop.
CJWW Agriculture Director Neil Billinger spoke to Hewlitt on Monday afternoon as he combined some durum about 12 miles southwest of Eston.
