The Lahaina wildfire that took place on Maui several days ago has officially become the deadliest wildfire in modern U.S. history, as the death toll rises to 93.
More than 2200 structures burned, and the cost to rebuild the shopping town of Lahaina was estimated to be $5.5 billion, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Officials say sirens stationed around the island, that were intended to warn of natural disasters, never sounded, and power and cellular outages prevented other forms of alerts.
The Maui County Police Chief says that dogs trained to detect bodies have covered only 3% of the search area, and the death toll will only continue to increase as more debris is moved and searched.
