The Saskatchewan All-Terrain Vehicle Association wants to raise awareness about the crucial role of safety while operating an ATV, as Monday marks the beginning of ATV Safety Week. SATVA General Manager John Meed says there are three main causes for ATV injuries. Alcohol consumption is number one. Meed says the reaction time of someone who is under the influence of alcohol is severely compromised, much like in any other vehicle.
The second most common cause of ATV injury is improper equipment. On the plus side, Meed says riders are getting better at wearing their helmets on certain ATVs, however, side-by-side drivers are not. Meed says under Saskatchewan law it is mandatory and roll cages can fail.
The third area of concern is stunting. he says many rollovers, collisions, and injuries come from this type of behavior. Several other risky behaviors include two people riding the same quad and letting children under the age of 12 operate an ATV alone. Operating an ATV is best done in groups, but Meed says if you must go out alone, let someone know where you are going and carry a cellphone.
