The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency says crews working to put out fires across the province are becoming exhausted, and the end of fire season is nowhere in sight. Vice President of Operations for SPSA Steve Roberts says they may have to bring crews in to relieve the firefighters that have been on the job for almost three weeks. However, he understands that resources could be tight, considering the situations in Nova Scotia and Alberta.
There are currently 20 active wildfires in Saskatchewan. Eight are classified as under ongoing assessment, four where the focus is to protect property, seven that are uncontained, and only one which is contained.
The SPSA is providing support for 81 people that have been evacuated from La Loche and relocated to Regina. They are also caring for evacuees from areas such as Dillon, St. George’s Hill, Michel Village, and English River First Nation, however there are no numbers available for those regions. Saskatchewan Health Authority provides medical, mental health, and addiction supports at all evacuation sites, as well as activities to ensure the psychological health of those who have left their homes.
