Video games have become a staple of modern life. I admit I don’t play video games nowadays. I might get to them someday if I could a) find the time, and b) wean myself off being such a devourer of current news. I Googled “popular video games” and came up with names such as Call of Duty: Black Ops II and III, Marvel’s Spider-Man, The Legend of Zelda, League of Legends, Grand Theft Auto V, Minecraft, Call of Duty, and here’s a name a recognize: Super Mario, in a game called Super Mario Odyssey. Mario Brothers I remember from when our kids were young. They had me playing Dr Mario for a bit. If you ask about the first video game ever played, many people, including me, would probably say Pong, back when video gaming reached mainstream popularity in the 1970’s. In fact, It appears the first true video games were created in the early 1950’s, initially created as technology demonstrations. One of the earliest known digital computer games available outside the walls of academia was 1962’s Space Wars. The commercial video game industry launched in 1971 with the first arcade video game, Computer Space, then along came Pong, the electronic ping-pong game manufactured by Atari and released in 1972. “King” Pong (my adjective only) was probably the number one game that kicked off a new era of video gaming and look what an industry it is today!
