A news release from the federal government announced all new light-duty cars and passenger truck sales must be zero-emission by 2035. In other words you will be buying an electric car or truck starting in 2035. That is only 14 years away. The feds say their announcement includes incentives that help with the upfront costs through investments in zero emission charging infrastructure and partnerships. The feds say their announcement includes incentives that help with the upfront costs of zero emission vehicles to investments in zero emission charging infrastructure and partnerships with auto manufacturers. If ever there was a signal that the federal government is out of touch with western Canada I think that announcement yesterday was the red flag waving. Help with charging stations? In places like La Loche, Ogema, Southend, Frontier? I could go on naming names of out of the way communities connected by the most kilometres of roads in one province anywhere in Canada. Not including the alienation of the oil and gas sector which nicely kept much of the rest of the country in extra cash for many years as we helped out with equalization payments. Don’t kid yourself, Saskatchewan becoming a have process was on the back of the oil and gas industry. And say what you want about electric cars using less energy – the energy they use, at least here, is coal based. But wait we’re phasing that out too. I feel like the government has a bunch of puzzle pieces and they’re just jamming in to spaces they don’t fit but trying to make happy picture out of it anyway.
