Saskatchewan’s NDP leader is calling on Premier Scott Moe to review SaskTel’s ties with Huawei. Huawei is the Chinese company whose Chief Financial Officer was arrested in Canada. She is facing extradition to the U-S based on allegations she helped defraud banks to avoid sanctions on Iran.
Among several requests, Ryan Meili wants the Premier to place an immediate moratorium on any further contracts between SaskTel and Huawei. The official opposition also want the government to request an urgent analysis by the Canadian Security Intelligence Services of any potential risk for espionage.
The NDP says since 2010 SaskTel ratepayers have paid Huawei more than 181 million dollars for services. Going forward Huawei is reportedly going to, through a joint agreement with SaskTel, provide 5G service to the University of Regina.
