VelimirĀ Milenkovic has settled in Saskatoon with his wife and two young sons.The 41-year-old came from Serbia in October 2013 hoping to make a new life for his family in Canada after deciding to leave his native country.In today’s third part of CJWW’s five part series, more about the challenging regulatory journey before getting medical licensing almost two years later.Dr. Milenkovic learned quickly the cost of living was much higher in Canada while also financing the 10-thousand dollars needed for exams and related expenses.He says the low interest loan from Windmill Microlending was instrumental in eventually getting a medical license, but finding a job was difficult.Dr. Milenkovic says even coffee shop owners were leery about hiring him knowing he would return to the medical profession.He did land a job working overnight in a factory with supplemental income from work in cosmetic procedure salons and counting pills at a pharmacy.A welcomed complication was the arrival of their second son but Velimir and his wife needed someone to look after their other young son during and just after the birth.The crisis nursery stepped up and another immigrant family from Macedonia also helped out.Tomorrow we hear about how a staple of Canadian culture helped prove moving to Canada was the right decision.
