Saskatoon’s Miracle Child is a fighter.
Gemma Strozen had her first two of four open heart surgeries at just 10 and 14 days old. The second was needed due to complications from the first.
The six-year-old now plays sports including running but says her favourite activity is dancing.
Gemma’s mum Rachael Strozen says they learned her daughter had a life-threatening heart defect 23-weeks into her pregnancy and the little girl was essentially born with half of a heart.
Rachael says Gemma is healthy and now only needs a yearly cardiac check-up.
She says they have gotten through a long and stressful journey as a family by taking things a day at a time.
Gemma was on hand at the Rosewood Dairy Queen for Miracle Treat Day as proceeds from all DQ Blizzard sales will go to the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital.
Gemma says she likes all flavours but was probably going to have an Oreo Blizzard.
