Today is Administrative Professionals Day. It used to be called Secretaries Day from the 1950’s to the 90’s, and then I believe it was called Administrative Assistants Day for a while. However, the name professionals fits because by definition if you get paid you are a professional. Of course admin assistants don’t get paid what the boss gets paid even though they are invaluable to a company or organization. They are the glue that holds things together, knows where everything is and what to do when. They look after essential functions that keep things running, leaving the boss time to strategize and plan, while the others in his foursome are hitting their shots. Responsibility without power. But take heart, your day will come. Scott Adams, creator of the Dilbert comic strip, had a great quote: “Someday people who know how to use computers will rule over those who don’t. And there will be a special name for them: secretaries”. Actually, this whole last week of April is dedicated to recognizing the work of administrative support professionals, from executive assistants through receptionists, any and all clerical staff. The Wednesday is THE day to show the recognition in some way. Cards, flowers, chocolates, lunch or maybe all the above?
