Buying the former St. Alphonse Catholic School is one of the ways the Village of Viscount is working on enticing people to move to that community.
Mayor Moe Kirzinger says you need to have homes available if you want families to move in and the idea is to renovate the building into a 4-plex.
The Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Division closed down the school about 2 years ago, with only 3 students enrolled, who then moved to Viscount’s K to 12 school.
Kirzinger says the Division approached Viscount about buying the school and the legalities are in the works right now to transfer the ownership title for a dollar.
A local contractor will then buy the building for an undisclosed amount and make it into a 4-plex, complete with solar panels.
Viscount’s population is about 275 right now, but the goal is around 500 for this community, which is about 45 minutes east of Saskatoon.
Kirzinger expects the renovation work on the school will begin later this winter.
