Debunking the myths of mental illness, how to de-stress and how to recognize anxiety and depression in yourself and others are some of the topics being discussed today (Wed) at Bishop James Mahoney High School for World Mental Health Day. Principal Kim Pasloski says Grade 10 students are spending the entire day in sessions that create awareness on mental illness and developing strategies to reduce daily stress. The agenda includes a question and answer session about mental health developed and delivered by University of Saskatchewan 4th year nursing students, art therapy, a de-stress walk with posters promoting awareness and laughter therapy. Grades 9, 11 and 12 will have an hour during the day to bring awareness to mental illness and to debunk some of the myths. Those would include that people who have mental illness are weak or that mental illnesses aren’t real. The World Federation for Mental Health cites that one in four people will experience poor mental health at some point in their lives.
