Packing school lunches every weekday and trying to keep them healthy can seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually an opportunity to spend some time with your children. That from Gordon Zello, a nutrition professor at the University of Saskatchewan, who says younger children like to help so getting them involved gives you a chance to explain what is healthy and what is not and what the best choices are. He explains that if you give your kids healthy options at an early age, they are more apt to choose healthier foods for the rest of their lives, but if their lunch diet is mostly convenient, pre-packaged foods, it’s a hard habit to break. If you look online for healthy lunches, you may find some pretty complicated recipes, Zello says, but it doesn’t have to be that way. A few suggestions for school lunches are a boiled egg, wraps with a low fat protein, raw vegetables with dip, fruits, and darker chocolate for a treat.
