The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is rejecting the results of a federal forensic audit and has launched legal action against Indigenous Services Canada.
The federal department claims more than 12.3 million dollars in spending was ineligible under funding agreements.
In a news release, the F-S-I-N says it fully cooperated with the audit and argues that nearly eight million dollars spent on personal protective equipment had already been verified by federal officials before being added back into the disputed amount.
The organization also disputes roughly 4.4 million dollars in administration costs, saying Ottawa has not provided policies to justify rejecting those expenses.
Chief Bobby Cameron says the matter is far from settled and believes an independent review will show the spending was legitimate.
The F-S-I-N, which represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan, says it will continue to challenge the findings in court.
