SARCAN’s and SK Recycles new joint investment is helping to make foam recycling better with a new foam densifier in Saskatoon.

The densifier began transforming foam in March. Previously only around 500 kilograms of foam packaging could be shipped at a time. The new densifier allows for 16,000 kilograms of packaging to be shipped, or 32 times more foam then before. The foam is sent off to a verified end market in Quebec where the material is turned into extruded polystyrene insulation boards.

Director of Post Collection with SK Recycles Kelly Goyer says the investment is a big step in making the recycling system in the province work better.

“Our role is to make sure these materials are collected, processed, and directed to end markets where they can be recycled responsibly and can be turned into something new.”

SARCAN started accepting foam packaging in December 2024. Since then more than 45,000 kilograms of foam has been recycled.
