The warmer, prolonged fall we’re supposed to have may be good news for construction season in Saskatoon. 

Saskatoon Director of Construction and Design, Matt Jurkiewicz, says it’s not something they’ll bank on, but if the weather stays nice into the winter months, crews will take advantage of it.  

“If the weather is beautiful in December, we’ll be doing work in December, which is great but also means the pain is stretched a little bit longer. We’re hopeful for good weather for the next several weeks to wrap up some of these projects.”

He says a few ongoing projects of note include the 25th Street Water main project, intersection work at Dufferin Avenue and 12th Street East, and Link system construction on College Drive, where work will continue until the end of the season.

“While some sections of the roadways in the area of the University Bridge have reopened, we do continue to ask drivers that do not need to travel to the hospitals to keep using alternate routes wherever possible.”

Although there is still much to do, Jurkiewicz says crews have also completed a significant amount of work already.  

“Overnight paving jobs were completed to minimize traffic disruptions including on portions of Circle Drive, Attridge Drive, McOrmond Drive, and Avenue C North. Several Link platforms were also completed along 8th Street and Preston Avenue.”

The City says the rainy summer delayed the BRT project slightly, but the launch is still scheduled for 2028.

Jurkiewicz adds that this season’s projects have stayed within budget, but he could see the City spending more next year as the cost of fuel, labour and materials increases.
