The break on the fuel tax was set to expire on Labour Day. It was announced last week by the federal government that they would extend the temporary pause of the federal fuel excise tax on gas and diesel into the new year.

It will now be extended until the end of January. The plan right now is to reintroduce half of the tax on February First with the remainder on April First next year.

Back in April 2026, the federal government said the tax suspension would reduce the cost of gas by 10 cent per litre and four cents on diesel.

Conservative Leader Pierre Pollievre says the gas taxes should be suspended until Labor Day 2027.
