Horseshoes are among the products rising in price as the result of the Canada/U.S. trade war.
The current 25 per cent Canadian tariff on imported farrier supplies is slated to double to 50 per cent next Tuesday.
Laurie Tonita is a farrier and also owns his own farrier supply business south of Saskatoon. He purchases bulk shipments from a Minneapolis-based company every six weeks. There is no Canadian alternative.
Tonita says the tariffs are pushing up prices.
Tonita says farriers are forced to pass on the extra costs to their customers. A few customers closer to the U.S border could get supplies at an American retail outlet in Billings or Great Falls, but there are some drawbacks, such as an $800 limit for a 48-hour visit.
Tonita says farriers and horse owners are frustrated that Canada has not reached a trade agreement with the United States that would end current tariffs.
