This is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. Ahead of the Council of the Federation meetings BC’s Premier said it best that no deal is better than a bad deal. This of course in reference to renegotiating CUSMA – the Canada-U.S. -Mexico agreement. Our Premier Scot Moe was also spot on, which is why it is so disheartening that not everyone recognizes how, as he said, “The United States latest tariff threats against Canada are unjustified and will drive up prices and kill jobs on both sides of the border.” Meanwhile the Prime Minister pointed out previously that U.S. tariffs, including those targeting Canada’s auto sector, contravene the free trade agreement and noted Canada has responded by matching those measures. Canada has been working to renegotiate CUSMA for 18 months and Mark Carney says those discussions will now intensify. To what end? The tariff talk from Trump is a tactic in his efforts to remain relevant while continuing to cause chaos which has been his calling card.
