Pre-budget consultations for Budget 2026 are now underway, inviting Canadians to help shape the government’s next budget, being unveiled in the fall.

Wayne Long, Secretary of State and Liberal MP, is currently in Saskatchewan, getting a feel for what the people of the prairies want to see their tax dollars spent on. He will spend several days in Saskatoon before heading to Regina.

Long says based on what he’s been hearing already, Budget 2026 will have a strong focus on major projects and infrastructure investments, defense, and the agriculture sector.

“The agriculture sector employs more people per capita than any sector in this country, and we want to continue that.”

Long says the government wants to ensure that every cent in the budget is going towards programs to help Canadians, economy boosting initiatives, and economy diversification efforts. He says while fiscal responsibility will also be of key importance, attracting investment is a high priority right now, given Canada’s current trade relationship with the United States.

“Cause if you don’t have a healthy economy, and a growing economy, and an economy that continues to produce, nothing else matters. We will just continue to spiral, and spiral, and spiral, into further deficit, and that’s not what we want to do.”

There is an online pre-budget submission and questionnaire portal where Canadians can provide the government with feedback on what they’d like to see funded this fall.

“Prime Minister Carney is absolutely intent on listening. He wants to get feedback from Canadians, families, sectors, you name it, and that’s how we build a budget that’s reactive and reflective of where Canada needs to go.”
