SeCan has a very visible presence at Ag in Motion with more than sixty varieties side-by-side on a one-acre plot that allows farmers to compare new varieties with older standards

Two new wheat varieties are being promoted by SeCan as improvements over current varieties.

AAC Westking was developed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) in Swift Current and has the potential to surpass AAC Brandon with a six per cent higher yield, a shorter, strong straw for excellent lodging resistance and it is paired with solid resistance to Fusarium Head Blight.

AAC Oakman vb is Secan’s newest solid-stemmed CWRS variety, specifically bred to resist wheat stem sawfly. It yields a little less than AAC Brandon, but has strong resistance to rust and has tolerance to wheat midge.

CJWW Agriculture Director Neil Billinger spoke to Todd Hyra, SeCan’s western business manager about the wheat and durum varieties, as well as new barley and pulse crops available.
