Environment Canada says based on major damage to a farmyard the tornado in Oxbow on Tuesday evening is rated an EF3 tornado. The Weather Network says its Canada’s strongest tornado since a twister hit Didsbury, Alberta in 2023.
The Northern Tornadoes Project says the tornado’s maximum wind speed was estimated at 245 km/h.
There was also confirmed golf ball sized hail in Regina which according to a social media post by Government House, the Lieutenant Governor’s official office, took a toll on the property.
The post says hail pummeled the property, breaking numerous windows on the west side of the building and devastating the newly planted Edwardian Gardens.
The conservatory suffered the most damage. Hail destroyed the glass roof and left broken glass everywhere. As a result, the Government House Conservatory will be closed for the foreseeable future.
The rest of Government House remains open to the public during regular hours. There was localized flooding in Regina as well while Weyburn and Indian Head saw 30 millimetres of rain and 85 kilometre per hour winds were recorded in Estevan and Weyburn.
In Manitoba that same storm system dropped 255 millimetres of rain on Stonewall just northwest of Winnipeg while Winnipeg itself saw 122 millimetres of rain. There are two confirmed tornadoes in Manitoba and a peak wind gust of 130 kilometres an hour in two communities – Dand and Deloraine.
