The leaders of western Canada and the territories are set to meet in Kananaskis Monday for the Western Premiers’ Conference, which is reported will have a focus on trade, the economy, energy security, defense and nation-building projects, however separatism and a contentious oil pipeline will most likely be the elephants in the room.
The premiers of United Conservative Alberta and NDP British Columbia are at odds over the pipeline to the B.C. coast, a project affirmed recently between the governments of Canada and Alberta.
In a news release earlier this month, B.C. Premier David Eby stated, “As a country, it’s time to stop rewarding bad behaviour. It cannot be the case that the projects that get prioritized in Canada are those where a premier threatens to leave the country.”
Danielle Smith announced on Thursday she’s putting a question about the province’s future in Confederation on an Oct. 19 referendum. Albertans will be asked if they want the province to remain in Canada or if they want a future binding referendum on separation.
