The Saskatchewan NDP are drawing attention to another leaked memo from SaskPower, which allegedly warns that Scott Moe’s $26 billion ‘extreme risk’ coal plan will double power rates.

The document indicates that rates will rise 20 per cent by 2030 and 95 per cent by 2040, without the carbon tax.

The NDP says the internal briefing note also makes it clear that the full power supply plan wasn’t to be made public or shared with SaskPower’s staff:

This comes after the first leaked memo, which the Opposition stated showed the Saskatchewan government coal-extension plan could cost $26 billion, including $11.4 billion in capital costs, $13 billion in fuel costs, $1.4 billion in transmission costs and nearly $400 million already committed.

In a response, SaskPower CEO Rupen Pandya issued a statement that indicated the costly plan was merely an option.

“As with any large organization, various scenarios, analyses, and options may be reviewed internally before decisions are made. Those discussions should not be confused with finalized government direction or policy. ”

The response also indicates that the information was taken out of context, which does not serve public confidence.
