The numbers are in, and SARCAN accomplished some impressive feats in 2024-25.
That’s from Director of Recycling Operations Kevin Acton.
He says 491 million beverage containers were diverted from provincial landfills in 2024-25. That’s about 43 million pounds of material, one per cent more than last year.
“In energy savings, our system is equivalent to avoiding about 10,500 cars on the road annually…and the energy saved by recycling at SARCAN is equivalent to powering a city the size of Moose Jaw or Prince Albert for a year.”
That’s not all, Saskatchewan’s return rate was 82.6 per cent of total beverage containers sold, which far exceeds the national average of 75.9 per cent.
SARCAN also collected 130,000 pounds of batteries, and in December 2024, SARCAN started collecting flexible plastics, Styrofoam, grocery bags, and glass province-wide.
“Last year, 2025, was the first full year of that material coming in, so that’s been really exciting. We’ve got a lot of people coming to the depots and good volumes of that coming in, as well.”
Acton adds that SARCAN is always growing and expanding, with new depots cropping up all around the province.
“In 2024-25, we moved to a new location in Estevan, Grenfell, a new one being added onto in Wakaw this year, Martensville, a new depot coming along there.”
The 2026-27 provincial budget included more than $37 million allocated to SARCAN, including an increase of $117,000 in operational funding grants.
