An inmate from the maximum-security unit at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary has died and two more were injured following an altercation that took place Tuesday.
Horace Bear was the inmate who died. He was serving a sentence of 2 years, 9 months, and 24 days, which commenced on December 13, 2024.
One of the injured inmates was treated and returned to the institution later that evening, while another inmate remains hospitalized.
The maximum-security unit locked down, and operations were modified to ensure the safety of the institution, its staff and inmates, and at this time, the institution continues to operate on a modified routine.
Correctional Services of Canada will review the circumstances, and the coroner will be notified. The Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit has taken carriage of the investigation.
