The Saskatchewan Teacher’s Federation is urging the public to contact their MLAs in response to the release of the 2026-27 education budget.
STF President Samantha Becotte says for the last two years, Saskatchewan’s budgets have been working successfully to restore per student funding- until this year, that is.
“The numbers matter. Education funding is increasing by 2.57 per cent. Yet, after inflation and expected enrolment growth, that equals to an inflation-adjusted decrease of $33 per student compared to last year.”
She adds that inflation is predicted to be 2.3 per cent this year, which eats up most of the budget, and schools around the province are likely to see cuts and pressures.
“Whether that is larger class sizes, more multi-graded or multi-curricular classes, fewer supports available for students, like SLPs, OTs, mental health counsellors, or cuts, reductions, or total eliminations to the important programs and services that are offered in schools.”
Becotte says through a public advocacy initiative called Tell Them Tuesday, concerned parents and community members are encouraged to ask their MLAs to acknowledge the importance of education, explain how the budget will impact schools, and outline what actions they will take to advocate for Saskatchewan students.
