Had it happened moments earlier, he might not have lived to tell the story.
Over the weekend, a semi collided with a police vehicle on Highway #1, nearly hitting an RCMP officer conducting a traffic stop.
On Saturday at 3:45 p.m., a Saskatchewan RCMP police officer was conducting a traffic stop in the eastbound lane of Highway #1, near Grand Coulee.
A release from the RCMP says the officer was just walking back to his vehicle when he saw a semi driving at highway speeds and not moving into the passing lane.
To get out of the way, the officer ran towards the ditch and jumped in at the same time the semi collided with his parked police vehicle, which had its emergency light activated. The police vehicle was significantly damaged.
After the collision, the semi came to a stop and remained at the scene of the collision. The driver was issued two tickets: one for driving without due care and attention and one for driving without reasonable consideration for others.
Sgt. Jason Sauve says this serves as a reminder to slow down to 60 km/hour when passing emergency vehicles that have their lights activated, such as EMS, fire, and police vehicles, as well as tow trucks, and highway workers, and whenever possible, move into the passing lane.
