The provincial elm tree pruning ban lifts on September 1st, meaning the yardwork you’ve been waiting to accomplish can finally commence this Labour Day long weekend.
The ban is put in place from April 1 to August 31 each year to help reduce the risk of spreading Dutch Elm Disease. DED is a fungus spread by elm bark beetles that kills elm trees.
A release from the province says whether you hire someone or do it yourself, it is important to prune trees correctly, as improper pruning can damage your trees and spread diseases. A provincially recognized training program must be completed by anyone pruning elm trees, or the pruner must be accompanied by someone who has this training.
After the job is done, the province reminds everyone tp dispose of any elm wood promptly, at the location designated by your local municipal authority.
