Major oil refinery outages in the United States are impacting fuel prices in the Prairie provinces

According to GasBuddy, and head petroleum analyst Patrick De Haan, average retail gasoline prices in Saskatoon have risen 13.8 c/L in the past week, averaging 141.71 c/L on Sunday.

Year-over-year, prices on Sunday were 17 c/L lower than the same day in 2024 and are 10 c/L higher than a month ago.

According to GasBuddy historical data, gasoline prices on this day in history in Saskatoon have ranged widely over the last five years: ranging between 101.29 c/L in 2020 and 158.68 c/L in 2024.

However, nationally, prices have increased 2.8 c/L in the last week to 137.70 c/L, and in Saskatchewan prices sit at 138.11 c/L, up 6.0 c/L from last week.

De Haan says “With those refinery issues beginning to ease, we may see some limited relief ahead. Oil prices, meanwhile, remain relatively stable in the low $60s, and barring major hurricane disruptions or shifts in the geopolitical landscape, gas price fluctuations across Canada may remain modest heading into fall.”
