I was pondering what to talk about today and then I had sort of an accident….a thought struck me…..today’s date. 42 years ago today, July 11, 1983, was my first day of work in Saskatoon as Program Director of CJWW radio. Today there are seven commercial radio stations in the city, five FM and two AM, but in 1983 there were four stations in total, three AM and one FM. CJWW was at 1370 AM. It moved down to 750 on the dial in 1985 and finally to 600 in 1995. Our company called Saskatoon Media Group today has two FM stations as well, 92.9 the Bull and 98Cool. I arrived in Saskatoon from Calgary on Sunday, July 10 in ‘83 and called the station manager of CJWW to say I was here and would show up for work the next morning. I was told to wear jeans because we were going to the Saskatoon Exhibition the next day, July 11. I thought, “I’m going to like this job”! The Ex was held in July in those days at the Exhibition grounds, now Prairieland Park. As I finish 42 years in Saskatoon radio I look back with nostalgia at all the water that’s figuratively flowed under the bridge. I began doing these Coffeetalks in November 1997, almost 28 years ago, and I’m scheduled to do my final Coffeetalk next month, on Friday August 29th as I am retiring. I’ll say something more about that when we get there. In the meantime, let’s soldier on and enjoy the summer of ’25.
That’s Coffeetalk. I’m Vic Dubois.
