Consisting of the only remaining log dugout built by Doukhobor settlers in Saskatchewan, the Doukhobor Dugout House is a National Historic Site of Canada located near Blaine Lake and opening day is July 5th. Meant to showcase who the Doukhobors who are a pacifist, Christian group who fled to Canada from Russia in 1899, many settling in Saskatchewan seeking religious freedom and refuge from persecution in Russia.
They are inviting everyone to spend time learning about the history, with the option of staying overnight. There are now two guesthouses that can host two adults each, designed with traditional Doukhobor architecture and decorated with cultural artifacts. And new this year is Season of Colours. Ten areas of historical significance including a new patio area overlooking the river valley called Peter The Lordly Verigin.
The opening day will also include Lieutenant Governor Bernadette McIntyre.

Founder Brenda Cheveldayoff says it’s important to learn about Saskatchewan and its heritage.
“The Doukhobors came to Canada and settled in the prairies and lived in the ground, in caves, carved into the sides of the hills and we have the only surviving Dugout House left in Canada.”
