Take two! And, the Saskatoon Berries did just that Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader from the Energy City Cactus Rats by scores of 4-3 in an extra inning and 4-0 at Cairns Field.
The Berries bounced back from an 8-7 loss in Medicine Hat in their previous game back on Thursday and had time to reflect on that and get ready for Sunday with scheduled games Friday in Medicine Hat and Saturday at Cairns Field against the former Edmonton Prospects being postponed by rain. In Game 1, shortstop Nathan Houston scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as he started as the courtesy runner at second base, stole third and crossed home plate when Energy City shortstop Ten Shindo threw wildly to first place on Nomar Prieto’s groundball that would’ve been the third out. In Game 2, Houston stroked three singles and catcher Bailyn Sorenson (pictured) hit a home run while Sorenson coaxed three Saskatoon pitchers into scattering just four singles. The twinbill sweep improved the Berries’ overall record to 17-3 and their home diamond mark to 12-0 as a total of 2,651 fans took in the two games on a cool, windy summer afternoon. Saskatoon starts a home-and-home series Tuesday in Regina, then hosts the Red Sox Wednesday at 7 o’clock at Cairns Field.
