The parents of a paralyzed Humboldt Broncos hockey player are preparing for the next period of his recovery.
Ryan Straschnitzki is still undergoing physiotherapy at the Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia, but is expected to return home to Airdrie, Alberta in a matter of weeks.
The 19-year-old was paralyzed from the chest down when a bus carrying the Broncos junior hockey team collided with a tractor-trailer north of Tisdale, Saskatchewan.
His father, Tom Straschnitzki, says he’s already received training on how to care for his son once he’s no longer under the watchful eye of around-the-clock medical personnel.
The family home is also about to undergo major renovations to make it accessible for Ryan.
A fundraiser is being held in Airdrie tonight to help raise money to defray the family’s costs.
