Coffeetalk is broadcast Monday, Wednesday and Friday so I wasn’t here on April Fool’s Day. I’ve talked in the past about how the day isn’t what it used to be when it was common to play pranks on fellow workers or classmates. And radio stations had quite a bit of fun devising fairly elaborate pranks to use on the air. I was involved in a number of them over the years, my favourite being the time in the late 1980’s, when as the morning show host on CJWW I talked about how our provincial government was going to install toll booths on our provincial highways to raise money to fix the roads. We heard about that one for a couple of weeks from those who had missed us saying “April Fool” at noon and the provincial government wasn’t too thrilled about the feedback. Around the same year a radio DJ in Los Angeles said on the air that the highway system in LA was going to be shut down for repairs for a month. The overwhelming public reaction was stunning, and the California Department of Transportation didn’t think that one was too funny either. Does anyone remember April 1, 1997 when Wheel of Fortune host Past Sajak and Jeopardy host Alex Trebek switched places? Speaking of switching places, as recently as April 1st 2022 late night talk show hosts Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel did it. Back in 2008 on CBC Radio’s As It Happens, a Royal Canadian Mint spokesperson was interviewed who said our $5 Bill was being replaced by a $3 coin called the “Threenie”. There’s nothing wrong with a good old fashioned April Fools joke, as long as it doesn’t actually harm anything or anybody.
