We celebrated National Flag Day this past Saturday. Up until 1965, Canada’s unofficial flag was the Red Ensign that had a shield with Canada’s Coat of Arms as well as the British Union Jack. As of February 15, 1965, our official flag has been the red Maple Leaf on a white background. Man, it’s hard to believe 1965 was 60 years ago. Lester B. Pearson was our Prime Minister. Lyndon Baines Johnson was the president of the United States. On planet earth in ‘65 we had some conflicts happening in various spots and the one we remember the most of course is the Vietnam War. There were a couple of hit songs in ’65 with war and conflict themes, one being Eve of Destruction mentioning turmoil in the Middle East and the threat of nuclear war. Some of the lyrics went, “If the button is pushed there’s no runnin’ away. There’ll be no one to save with the world in a grave. Take a look around you boy, it’s bound to scare you boy”. Another tune was “It’s Good News Week” whose chorus went, “Someone’s dropped a bomb somewhere, Contaminating atmosphere, And blackening the sky”. Those were happy and uplifting weren’t they?! OK, Let’s jump in the time machine and zoom forward 60 years to the year 2025 where I don’t have to point out what’s going on in various places on the planet. Humanity keeps repeating the same mistakes plus making new ones. Look at our southern neighbour with the world’s most powerful military, who has opened the cages and put the chimpanzees in charge of the zoo.
