For their first order of business as the Official Opposition, the Saskatchewan NDP is going to introduce an emergency motion to cut the provincial gas tax for six months.

NDP Leader Carla Beck says if the motion is passed, Saskatchewan drivers will be paying anywhere from $1.15 to $1.20 by Wednesday.

“Gas is $1.12 in Manitoba (as of) yesterday. This is a place where they cut the gas tax. We certainly haven’t seen prices like $1.12 for a long time.” Alberta, Ontario, and Newfoundland and Labrador have also delivered gas tax relief.

The NDP will also be introducing a second motion, which if successful will launch an investigation into why grocery prices are so high compared to previous years, especially in northern Saskatchewan.

“Eighteen dollars for a jug of milk is crazy,” Beck admitted.

Last week, 27 people from La Ronge were diagnosed with scurvy, and experts suspect it stemmed from not being able to afford nutritious groceries.

From the investigation, Beck would expect tangible measures and recommendations that would help address the crisis.

The motions will be introduced on Tuesday.
