Five people were killed as a result of two serious crashes on Highway 4 that occurred on Friday.

The first occurred at roughly 12:45pm just south of Cochin.

Battlefords RCMP, local fire, EMS, and STARS responded to the scene, where it was determined that a truck and van collided.

The 48-year-old female driver of the van and her five and six-year-old male passengers were declared dead at the scene. They were from Flying Dust First Nation.

An adult female passenger in the van was also taken to hospital with serious injuries, as was the adult male driver and sole occupant of the truck, who was airlifted by STARS.

Not even three hours later, officers responded to a second serious crash about seven kilometers south of Battleford.

Investigation determined a motorhome and SUV collided, and the 29-year-old female driver of the SUV and one six-month-old male passenger were declared dead by EMS at the scene. They were both from Red Pheasant First Nation.

An adult male passenger in the SUV was taken to hospital with serious injuries, and a male child in the SUV was airlifted there by STARS.

The adult male driver and adult female passenger of the motorhome were taken to hospital, as well.

Both investigations are ongoing.
