Good news regarding Saskatchewan’s employment numbers was relayed yesterday by the Minister of Trade and Export Development.
Jeremy Harrison shared that according to Statistics Canada’s latest Labour Force Survey, there are 9000 more people working in the province today than ever before, with over 614,000 employed people.
“Month over month some wonderful news, as well. Over 5,000 jobs created over the course of the last month alone. Just to measure how significant that is, the entire country this month generated 27,000 new jobs. Over 5,400 of them generated right here in Saskatchewan.”
Saskatchewan now holds the third lowest unemployment rate in the country, as it was reduced to 5.6 per cent in May, down 0.1 per cent from April.
In addition, Harrison says nearly 70 per cent of the province’s GDP is driven by exports.
“Sixteen years ago, and this was a good year, about $16 billion worth of exports that came from Saskatchewan around the world. Last year we exported over $50 billion in exports.”
Harrison adds that Saskatchewan is currently one of the largest per capita investment destinations not just in Canada, but in the world.
