The Regina Police Service has alerted the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team about an officer-involved fatal shooting Sunday afternoon in the 1100 block of Gary Street. A news release from SIRT, says prior to this shooting, Regina Police had been getting reports about someone living in that area who was damaging neighbouring property, and began an investigation.
On Saturday, officers checked out the location, but didn’t encounter the 65-year-old man who was the subject of the complaint. Then there was another report Sunday afternoon, so officers responded again. Police say patrol officers talked with the man and comments made during that conversation led them to contain the home, while seeking a warrant to enter the home. The RPS Special Weapons and Tactics team arrived and then around 3:35 there was a confrontation outside between the man and police.
Police report that a marked patrol vehicle was struck by several gunshots and two officers shot their firearms, hitting the man. The man was assessed by EMS and declared dead on scene. That’s when a SIRT team was deployed to begin their investigation. Anyone who may have directly witnessed or who may have video of the incident is asked to email SIRT at sirt@gov.sk.ca
SIRT will investigate the conduct of police during this incident while the Regina Police Service will continue its investigation into the original incident.
