With several significant construction projects taking place on Saskatchewan highways this summer, the province is reminding motorists to slow down and stay alert when passing through work zones.
Highways Minister Lori Carr says there will be two significant construction projects taking place this summer, both near Regina. The first includes the twinning of highways 6 and 39 south of the city.
“And then we also have the bridge construction that’s happening right at the Ring Road South on the south side of Regina. We did the one section last year and we’ll do the second section this year.”
Ministry of Highways equipment operator Mike Layden says he has witnessed numerous incidents between motorists and members of construction crews, and he hopes this summer can remain injury-free.
“I understand that during the summer months everybody is in a ‘go-go’ mode to get to where they want to be, but I think it’s extremely important to understand that no matter where you’re going or how fast you’re going, we have to get their safely,” he explains. “Slow to 60 please. Listen to your flagger. Pay attention to what’s going on in the work zone. Let’s hope we can steer this construction season to safety.”
