A public inquest has been scheduled into the death of George Meldrum who died September 21, 2021, at Regina General Hospital. He was at the General Hospital’s Sleep Clinic and was transferred to the Emergency Department over concerns with his breathing. The news release says there was an incident that afternoon where security staff attempted to restrain Mr. Meldrum and he became unresponsive. Lifesaving measures were unsuccessful, and the 46-year-old man died.
The Coroner’s Service can direct an inquest be held into the death of any person. The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and where that person died and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths. The Coroner’s Inquest will take place March 18 to 22.
Coroner William Davern will preside at the inquest.
