It was not as bad as the catastrophic 2021 drought—- but Saskatchewan Crop Insurance estimates indemnities will reach $1.85 billion dollars this year.
Large portions of west-central, central, and southwest Saskatchewan endured a third consecutives drought. About 30 per cent of 2023 Crop Insurance Program claim payments have already been made to producers with the November 15th deadline to file a claim approaching quickly.
Crop Insurance payments in 2021 were $2.6 billion and fell to $1.4 billion last year. To put those numbers into perspective, indemnities were only $265 million in 2018, $260 million in 2019 and $188 million in 2020.
Crop Insurance premiums are split three ways with the producer paying 40 per cent, the federal government 36 percent and the Saskatchewan government 24 per cent.
