The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency says this year, the majority of the province’s wildfires were caused by human activity, not lightning.
Steve Roberts, SPSA Vice President of Operations, says as the long weekend approaches, he reminds the public to be cautious when starting campfires, riding ATVs, and setting off fireworks, especially in the dry conditions being experienced across the province.
He says there are resources on the SPSA website that provide information on how to protect property from wildfires, as well as how to prevent controlled fires from encroaching on the provincial forest.
Currently, there are 51 wildfires burning across the province. Five are contained, 31 are under ongoing assessment, 13 are where the focus is to protect property, and two are not contained. There have been 379 wildfires to date this year, and 321 is the five-year average.
