On Thursday, Official Opposition Leader Carla Beck reaffirmed her stance on the proposed closure of the RCMP Depot Division in Regina with a letter to the new federal Minister of Public Safety, Dominic LeBlanc.
Beck stated her disapproval, saying that the local economy would take a hit, and Saskatchewan needs to keep the 500+ jobs that the Depot provides.
She also mentioned potential opportunities for the Depot to partner with the University of Regina and the First Nations University to develop training and education standards for new recruits.
After the mass shooting tragedy in Nova Scotia on April 18th and 19th, 2020, the Nova Scotia Mass Casualty Commission called for moving away from the Depot method of training. this included the closure of the RCMP training depot in Regina to establish a Canadian Police College, which would train all police services in the country. They called for the transition to happen by 2032.
A week after the recommendations were made, the Saskatchewan Legislature unanimously passed an emergency motion calling for continued RCMP training in Regina. Any final decision would have to come from a federal level.
