An area of land located south of Saskatoon on the west side of the river is Meewasin’s top priority for possible development. Alan Otterbein, Meewasin’s Manager of Design and Development, says the area consists of a 23-hectare parcel, as well as the adjacent Yorath Island.
Meewasin has done a baseline inventory on the area and gotten a look at what it has to offer. The site has mainly native trees and shrubs, with some grassland areas that were opened up in the past for recreational use. There is also one house being rented on the land.
However, Otterbein says the majority of the site is below flood level, and a house at that location is not permitted. He adds that Meewasin could potentially extend their trails into the area, and the area might even hold potential for low impact passive recreation in the future. A news release from Meewasin says there will be opportunities for public engagement on what the site should be used for.
