Nearly $900,000 seized from a commercial traffic stop last year will go to Saskatchewan’s Civil Forfeiture Program. On September 1st, 2022 the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol stopped a semi travelling east out of Regina for a commercial inspection. The truck was believed to be going to Headingly, Manitoba. Upon inspection, officers say they noticed commercial vehicle violations and missed documentation. A search of the semi located two large duffle bags and one large canvas bag filled with $897,540 in cash.
Police say the cash was packaged in a way that was consistent with organized crime. The two men in the vehicle were arrested and released later that evening with no charges. On March 30th, the Provincial Crown applied for civil forfeiture and the Regina King’s Bench Court judge determined the seized money came from unlawful activity and was ordered to be sent to Saskatchewan’s Civil Forfeiture Program. The RCMP news release did not indicate why no charges were laid, or where the money originated.
