Saskatchewan residents with relatives and friends in the earthquake ravaged areas of Turkey and Syria will not have to pay long-distance or text charges until the end of the month.
The crown corporation says postpaid and prepaid long-distance charges for wireless, landline, and business calls made from Canada to Syria or Turkey are included.
Earlier Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the federal government would match funds donated to Canadian Red Cross relief effort up to $10 million, which is on top of the initial $10 million aid package. At last word, Monday’s earthquakes and aftershocks have killed at least 11,000 people.
Toronto-based humanitarian aid organization Global-Medic says it will have teams in Turkey to assist with search and rescue efforts as well as emergency relief for those affected.
Search teams from more than two dozen countries — including the U-S and Britain — have joined tens of thousands of local emergency personnel in Syria and Turkey.
